Tagging separate sidewalks

Hi,

I’m working on some pedestrian walking analysis in Kyiv. I’m happy to see how consistently separate sidewalk ways are mapped (highway=footway, footway=sidewalk). I would like to start indicating the existence of the separate sidewalk on the road’s way as well, using sidewalk:both = separate and similar. This is standard in other places with separate sidewalks, like Paris. It’s difficult for analysis software to automatically guess this in areas with complex junctions like OpenStreetMap, so manually tagging it is very helpful.

I’ll start making these changes around the center of Kyiv, focusing on bigger roads first. Please let me know if anybody has concerns or would like to do this differently. Thanks!

I can’t take full credit but it may be in part due to my small contribution to Quick-highways JOSM preset by Izhl. As in, adding sidewalks (and crosswalks). It’s handy.

I normally skip marking these on the road as I previously believed them to be redundant if the separate footwalks were present. The way it is described, I see no concerns so far, but sounds like a big amount of work consisting of isolated local tasks. Have you considered adding this as a task into, say, StreetComplete or other similar quick on-the-go app for completing OSM features? Strength is in numbers :)

I’ll check out that preset!

The tagging has some uses for matching a sidewalk to its road, handy for understanding the name or speed of the road a sidewalk is parallel to. I’ve started tagging this a bit today, but along the way, I’m finding and fixing more problems like:

  1. highway=footway missing footway=sidewalk
  2. Crossings already being split, but not tagged footway=crossing: Changeset: 173859420 | OpenStreetMap
  3. Crossings and sidewalks drawn together, needing a split: Changeset: 173833393 | OpenStreetMap

I’ll check into StreetComplete and other ideas for distributing fixup efforts. I have some WIP code to detect some of these problems (imperfectly and requiring manual fixes, of course), so maybe I could feed those into validation tasks somewhere.
