I also devote my time to OSM in various ways. I waste some of this time unnecessarily and I want to limit my losses.
Do you think I remember all the problematic accounts and that I am up to date?
Some people have stopped working, maybe temporarily. Some have already been reported by other users or are monitored by them.
A significant part of them returns like the phases of the moon.
I forgot about many of them for a while, but someday they will remind me or someone else.
How many of them have been forgotten by everyone and how much garbage is left, which now lies forgotten on the map. So someone in such a place will waste their time or pass by.
The whole idea is to have an effective and fast tool for the future, because there will always be troublesome users.
@pavvv proposed a mechanism for automatic, temporary blocking of an account after the system registers several user reports (simple click on the icon)
I will repeat it again. This is not a new problem Vandalisme, anonieme notes, onduidelijke imports en massa-edits etc. and many other threads.
Many do not discuss anymore because their efforts were in vain. Some left, and some quietly do their own thing.
I did not think of this myself.
I remember internal discussions about many users and related problems.
You saw them and sometimes asked questions. You checked users’ edits. What else can I tell you. Unfortunately, Walkowiak’s topic stretched over time and at some point did not seem to require stronger intervention. You got lost there yourself. True or false. Why? Because everyone is busy with something, and these things take too much time, so the details escape us. Unfortunately, we also waste time processing the same information again.
If he had been blocked immediately, he could have spoken up and the matter would have been resolved faster, with positive or negative results for one of the parties.
The fact is that these discussions are “stormy” and sometimes even several participants take part in them. Most watch, but few want to report in DWG for obvious reasons.
Many do not want to get their hands dirty, so they call me. Sometimes they hate me, but they need me.
I would also like to remind you that I also reported several users in different ways at the same time. e-mail, forum, website.
Suddenly, notifications started coming faster than I could read and process them.
“Amazing success.” Suddenly three people were temporarily blocked at once.
The fun will start again in a week.
The rest would be a repetition of what has been said many times and what most active OSM users know very well.
How long has the Barroszt case been going on (it will return in June)
How long and how many times has the topic of Walkowiak been raised?
Can’t these issues be resolved faster? Procedures need to be changed and information flow channels integrated.
Human resources in DWG are too small. DWG permissions are too limited.
Known and liked problems.
No replies to comments and messages.
Descriptions of changes. There are examples even on the Wiki.
No changes in the editing method. Senseless discussions (replies) despite providing links to OSM help and showing community opinions.
The rest are immeasurable losses resulting from this state of affairs that negatively affect other users, just don’t say anything.
I made a proposal. I can’t help it that many participants in previous discussions now remain silent when they are needed.
I prefer prevention than waiting and eliminating or leaving consequences.
Others prefer sweet words and cleaning up (if they remember to clean up after someone or feel like it).
I don’t make decisions.
Finally, one more note. If the “report account” option is so ineffective (it often doesn’t reach DWG), it’s worth changing it to “send a message to DWG” and the link will be redirected to data@openstreetmap.org
That would be some progress, because many people don’t know this address data@openstreetmap.org
If the will of the active majority is for me not to waste your time, then by all means. Someone else will waste your time. It’s your decision from whom and what form of time waste you prefer.
