OpenStreetMap in dark mode

Does anyone have any tips for putting the OpenStreetMap website into dark mode?

(help and support moderator here - I edited the post above to reflect what I think the user was asking - my apologies if I’ve got hold of the wrong end of the stick)

DarkReader does work, but I don’t really like the result on OSM-Carto.

It’s working now, without any external tool?

Hi, about one hour ago the website started showing the map darkened on any device, it appears to be linked to each browser’s light/dark settings.

I understand some people prefer it this way, but would it be possible to add an option to customize this behaviour?
The dark header is nice but the map is unusable for me

I was just about to post a separate thread about this issue as well but I guess I will add my voice here instead.

The muted colours with the dark filter are a serious downgrade in usability for me as well, as much as the dark interface is nice, and I have searched widely for a browser-side option as well to even just go back to light mode entirely for a specifc website without any luck either (I am on Firefox).

I like dark modes in general, but can someone (other than TH) explain the reason for the lack of choice & the dimmed tile window?

I guess you are welcome to give feedback here: Add light/dark mode preference · Issue #5324 · openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website · GitHub

Dave already commented in issue #5324.

Please don’t use comments on merged PRs - if you have a new issue then open a new issue or comment on one of the ones that has already been opened but moaning a merged PR is unlikely to achieve anything as it will mostly be invisible.

It is the worst implementation of a dark mode on a map, they simply put a kind of dark layer over the tiles preventing the elements on the map from being displayed correctly. OSM iD also received a dark style but there OSM Carto looks fine. I’m not criticizing the dark style of the website, just that the map should not have been darkened.
Additionally, the map shows a grid that I believe must be the limits of the tiles.
A vote to go back.
P.S. Great success offering the edit button in the mobile view

I can’t see another place to ask/say this, so:

I can’t see the map through this contrast filter. I have some vision problems and tend to use darkmode, but what I really need is contrast, and because the filter washes out any contrast, I can’t read the map at all. It sounds like I could disable dark mode to remover the filter but that isn’t ideal every time. The main reason I’m adding this is that I only have moderate vision needs, so anyone with more accessibility needs than me cannot use the map at all in this state.

I’m here, having searched for why the OSM website suddenly went dark. As others have said, the dark mode toolbar is a step forward, but the map rendering is problematic for me.

So is there a way to keep dark mode but not have it dim the map?

Is it possible to have a completely dark rendering layer instead of getting dimmed?

I’m with other comments above. OSM is completely unusable for me now without having to mess with extensions.

Why wasn’t this change discussed anywhere? Same for the history button - I don’t remember that being discussed either.

Both changes were discussed in depth, see the links above, or Issues · openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website · GitHub for website changes in general.

I mean, prior to being added. This change has caught pretty much everybody by surprise from what I can tell.

This greatly affects accessibility and surely a wider discussion or announcement should’ve been made to gather feedback?

Maybe in depth, but not widely.
