User ‘GhentTheftAuto’ has started importing trees from the Ghent Open Data into OpenStreetMap.
This was not done without any oversight. I’ve sent a CS-comment to them, and they indicated that they were willing to give some more explanation. I’m kindly inviting them to this thread.
I built a front-end tool that I run locally to manually compare the coordinates of existing nodes that were tagged as tree.
If an existing tree node is close to a tree described in the Open Data dataset, I add the genus and optionally a circumference for the bark. If there was no tree present in OSM, I create a tree with the properties from the dataset.
Later, I plan to use LIDAR scans to give the trees height information as well.
If there are any changes needed or more questions, I’m happy to answer them, I think it’s a very nice feature to have tree species and optional circumferences/heights for the trees in Ghent on Open Street Map
I import relevant attributes such as genus and circumference provided by the dataset alongside the unique identifier they provide, this is not truely needed if the relation is resolved purely spatially but I think the fysgro_id has merit as a way to backtracing to this dataset, which does get updates, some rather recent trees from 2025 are included e.g.
I think the above concerns duplication and conflation but I’m open to more suggestions!
Ofcourse I would, I have no viable way (and maybe need) of hosting it for now but I can share the source code with you if you have a Github account you can DM me?
