If there is any documentation, can https://community.openstreetmap.org link to it?

Thereā€™s appears to be no no link to any documentation from the links from https://community.openstreetmap.org/. Thereā€™s an about link (which says who the admins and moderators are) and an FAQ (which seems entirely concerned with etiquette guidelines).

Iā€™ve heard people talk about documentation, so it must exist somewhere, but can the site link to it?

Do You mean New Users Guide?

That just seems to be a link to a thread? That isnā€™t visible anywhere at https://community.openstreetmap.org/. Where is the searchable documentation? I tried searching that thread for ā€œdraftā€ (just an example) and found nothing.

It looks like what you need is some sort of official documentation for Discourse, which doesnā€™t appear to exist (apart from perhaps the Docs section on the meta forum).

Thats a useful link, thanks - and itā€™s searchable!

New user guide topic is linked from the global banner at the top of the forums, you might have discarded it for your user (clicking the X button)

It probably needs to be actually linked somewhere rather than just below (and in a smaller font size than) ā€œrequest a categoryā€.

Where do you think it would be best placed? Maybe the /faq page?

That would make sense. Currently that seems to be a copy of the etiquette guidelines rather than an FAQ list.

The way itā€™s been done https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/how-to-use-this-forum-for-new-users/314 isnā€™t really a solution to this problem - I just looked for this again and couldnā€™t find it again. If there can be only one FAQ then it needs to be above the ā€œetiquetteā€ gubbins, not below.

Participation guidelines and new userā€™s guide are now links by default on the sidebar to increase visibility.
