I keep being logged out from openstreetmap.org every second day or so. It didn’t use to be that way, but started some months or half a year ago, and just keep happening, even if I use “Remember me” when logging in, and the session cookie clearly is dated with almost a month validity. It seems I am getting logged out server side.
How can I prevent this from happening, and stay logged in for longer durations? Or why is this happening?
It is only on openstreetmap.org this happens, including for the iD editor. I remain logged in in the StreetComplete app, and on this forum.
Same issue here, it only happens to me on openstreetmap.org, not any other website. I found someone suggesting it may be because the usernames in the editor and the wiki were different. I got it changed and while it seemed as if it worked the first week or so, it’s back at logging me out.
Edit: It seems it’s a pretty deep problem, maybe related to the website’s own cache being filled up. There are multiple issues on GitHub but they are either closed without providing a solution or open but stalled.
To analyze your issue more effectively, it’s important to specify your usage environment in detail.
We need information such as which operating system you’re using, which browser and its version number, and whether the same issue occurs in other environments—such as a different OS or a different browser.
While I can’t guarantee that the suggestions below will solve the problem, they are the best we can try given the lack of concrete information.
Clear Browser Cache and Cookies, Then Log In Again
Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies, then logging in again at openstreetmap.org.

Use a Different Browser or Incognito
If the issue persists in your current browser, try using a different browser or logging in via incognito/private mod*

Log In from a Different Device
Try logging in on a different device to see if the issue also occurs there. This can help identify whether the problem is environment-specific.
Possible Server-Side Cause
This issue may stem from how OpenStreetMap’s servers manage user sessions.
Since this is beyond the user’s control, it may be helpful to report the issue to the OpenStreetMap developers or operations team and request improvements to session handling.
What is normal login cookie duration? “The real problem is that how long the cookie lasts is only one part of the equation - the other part is how long the session record on the server lasts because if that expires then the cookie becomes meaningless.” (here I would like to note that being logged out also happens to me these days, most recently yesterday, so it’s not only when there’s a big DDoS)
Does not really bother me since doing a daily “Cntrl+Shift+Del” to call up the “Clear browsing data and cookies” (The key combo in Vivaldi and Firefox is same). This action before closing the browser is not really needed as it is set to do this automatically on exit, but that’s me lack of trust in it actually doing it. As you see from the screen shot, just up since 8 and it’s collected 43 meg of cookie gunk and 150 meg of file temp file cache and slower and slower it goes as this keeps building.
Next day using the sign-in manager, which was taught to remember userid/email account, password for each site and especially taught to never remember anything for select sites. Click the userid field and a list pops up of the user(s) that logged in with that form, click and go.
That said, JOSM never seems to forget unless you hit the remove token button in OSM server preferences. A little browser extension actually makes the sign in swift
The Forget:
The Browser sign in page launched directly from JOSM, like once in a blue moon needed.
