in the past, there’s been a few CoMaps-related threads to announce features that relate to editing/interacting with OSM (e.g. about solving notes and support for check_date). We discussed that going forward it might be nicer to just have a mega-thread to post related updates. That way we don’t spam the forum and there’s a single thread to follow.
And with that to one of the recent OSM-editing related features: The OSM-editing features of CoMaps now support marking businesses as vacant/disused since the last release:
In terms of OSM-related updates: On Android, CoMaps now supports adding different types of charging sockets for chargers of electric vehicles in the OSM editor:
With the 2025.12.19 release, there have been some more improvements to the OSM editor and OSM-related features.
Beyond cleaning up unused code, this includes:
checking the length limit for OSM tags in value validation
set the priority of buildings to be lower than all POIs in the CoMaps changeset comments
Improved the warnings about outdated maps
Not really an OSM-related feature, but still of note for many people here I think as it relates to the maps at large: In order to make CoMaps be less dependent on the CoMaps-infrastructure, Android users can now self-host the map files, inside the Android app one can give a custom map server address that will serve the files instead of the CoMaps CDN.
Please note: For now, the Android app still only accepts files that are identical to the “official” ones though, to ensure compatibility and avoid people running potentially malicious files, but folks are already thinking about how to allow people to make customized files too (if that’s something you feel could contribute, please join the CoMaps community channels )
One can now add some POI types that require more than one OSM tag, e.g. artwork (sculptures, paintings..), tourism information (visitor centers, guideposts, maps..), communication masts, vending machines (tickets, coffee, sweets..), nail salons, swimming sport centers, wind generators, outdoor shelters (bivouac huts, lean-to..), places of worship (buddhist temples, churches, mosques..)
More POI types could be marked as vacant/disused, e.g. pharmacy, post office, bank, estate agent, casino, etc.
The tagging now supports the OSM healthcare and education tagging both in the map generation and in the editor
In this version, most OSM-related changes relate to displaying information from OSM, but maybe it motivates some folks to add those where missing! In particular, the changes are:
Show charge amounts for usage of facilities, e.g. “2 EUR/100l water”
Show population of cities, towns, etc. when they’re selected

With, Version 2026.05.06 is already out for iOS and on Android it’s so far only out via Codeberg (F-Droid & Google Play will hopefully be coming out soon), here are OSM related updates since the 2026.03.23:
Availability of organic options is shown for POIs like restaurants and supermarkets

Another big change in the latest release that’s not directly about OSM editing/display, but the maps itself: The CoMaps map version is no longer bound to the app version, allowing for more frequent delivery of map updates. The goal is to release new maps ~every week, now that creating new maps doesn’t mean having to make a formal app release.
Lastly: CoMaps is having its first birthday on Tuesday, May 12. To celebrate, the team is hosting a small community call to talk CoMaps, OSM and generally socialize. It’s been a while since the last post, since then we had two more releases, with some OSM-related changes.
The slow-down in app releases is mainly due to the decoupling of map & app updates that the May release brought. This allows us to take more time for the actual app releases, while still getting fresh maps to our users. In fact, we’ve settled into a weekly rhythm of publishing maps (the freshest ones are just out today!)
But the June & July releases brought some other OSM related updates too that I wanted to share here, including

Improved opening hours display for “off”, “closed” and “unknown” cases
OSM Editor: no trailing .0 for integer charging socket power value
Support for more website OSM tags & Xmas opening hours

I haven’t got a new map to download since the 8th of July map update. Weren’t there any updates between then and today? (although I also don’t see the update from today yet, after clicking the check for update button).
My guess is you’re on the Google Play Android version that was finally approved and released by Google yesterday (after a 14-day ‘review’ period )? If so, check for the update and you should be able to get new maps!
The reason for this is that the 2026.07.16 release brought some changes to the map format, which is why the latest map releases were incompatible with the older app version. The maps generated after the 8th of July (i.e. 260714, 260721 and since just now 260728 all require the latest release).
I noticed it’s been a while again since I left an update: In addition to the 2026.08.31 release from right after SotM 2026, the 2026.10.05 release was just submitted yesterday to the stores for review, but is already out on Codeberg (where the full release notes can be found as well).
In terms of OSM-related changes in those two versions:

added more categories (prison, dojo, bowling_alley, lounger, shop=craft, golf_course, miniature_golf and attraction rides (roller_coaster, carousel…) and assembly points)
prevent attempting to reupload changesets after a 400 Bad Request error
fixed crash on notes upload
Don’t interpret fee=donation as paid
Show ref for emergency phone POIs
Support roadshields in Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Morocco.
Fixed them for Romania and in Augsburg, Germany
Add tool hire shops and tool libraries to map
Distinguish abandoned buildings and customer parking on map
Display hotel/restaurant stars as text
Support searching for second_hand=yes/only places
Subway layer additions in Bielefeld, Utrecht, Auckland, Brisbane and Newcastle NSW
On Android:
Not directly OSM-related but such a frequently asked feature worth outlining here: The place pages now include Mangrove Reviews for many POI types, and it links out to our friends from MapComplete to leave reviews
