What would it take for this forum to be listed at https://www.openstreetmap.org/communities?

The OSM Community Forum is not listed at https://www.openstreetmap.org/communities. If the OpenStreetMap Foundation listed this forum at that site, it would help new OSM editors find this forum to get help and support.

The description for this forum could be taken from the OSM wiki page about the forum:

The OpenStreetMap Community Forum (community.openstreetmap.org) is the discussion forum provided by the OpenStreetMap Foundation for the OSM community.

You can log in to the forum with your main OSM account. If you don’t already have this, see Creating an Account.

An introductory guide for new users has been posted.

This post is inspired by Ilya Zverev’s comments during his State of the Map 2024 talk “Go Out And Map”.

New and existing editors are already pointed to the forum after editing.

The over use of the ‘community’ label is a bit annoying but the page you are referring to has a different purpose than to direct people here.

New and existing editors are also pointed to local chapters after editing, and yet those get this extra space anyway.

Personally, I believe it’s long overdue to give more prominence to community platforms such as this forum on osm.org. Yes, it’s hidden in “help”, but that doesn’t strike me as ideal. The purpose of a community/communities link should be to lead users to communication platforms, events (OSMCal) and other such resources, not just a bare-bones list of local chapters.

This forum can be considered as part of a “global community”, that exists besides the “local communities” already mentioned on the page.
