Waterway imports in the United States and the 3DHP replacing the NHD

Hi everyone! I wanted to post that I created a page on the wiki: 3D Hydrography Program - OpenStreetMap Wiki. The 3DHP is new and meant to eventually fully replace the old NHD. I wanted to create the page because eventually I might like to try doing an import somewhere the NHD was never imported before. That definitely isn’t possible yet, supposedly they’re going to make the first downloadable release of the data available by the end of this year. But in the interest of eventually being able to use the 3DHP with OSM, I wanted to at least organize the info that exists so far, and maybe start talking about it.

Plus I figure the wiki is editable, so there’s little damage I could do by starting the article.

Here’s the current coverage, most of it isn’t actually released in any form yet. But one day…

Thanks for looking!

I’d definitely like to see what the 3DHP data looks like. Hopefully the alignment will be MUCH better than NHD.

There were some questionable mappings of the NHD data model to OSM tags in old imports. We’ll have to see how the 3DHP data model has changed, but this is a good opportunity to discuss how we could use the data!

I’ve been trying to make time to listen in to the monthly USGS hydrography calls and they are super interesting. Fortunately, they’re recorded and available on YouTube in case folks want to check it out.

I would be happy to do a trial run of some of the Alaska data sometime. There’s a ton of named riverways up there that Kai and I have identified as missing (the 1337RiverProject) and if the data is pretty good…

Agree on the NHD part, though lots of mappers partly manually adjusted the NHD-data. So we need to be careful during any kind of automated replacement.

It should be, because it is being aligned to the elevation data, which is said to be accurate to within a meter or better. The issue, as with NHD, is whether some of the “streams” actually have water in them - ever. This might be even more of an issue than with NHD as my understanding is that it is being created in a mostly automated fashion from the elevation data.
