The Walkthrough for new users appears to assume a device capable of recognizing gestures. I have a desktop with a mouse. Maybe I’m too old-school. I could not get past the Walkthrough step where you are supposed to try zooming with gestures.
Anyway, I’m sure I can figure everything out.

I’m assuming that you mean the “walkthrough for new editors” that new mappers get in the iD editor. I’ve just been through that, and didn’t have to use gestures at all. The bit of text I suspect that you’re referring to says “You can zoom the map by scrolling with a mouse wheel or trackpad, or by pressing the + / - buttons”. That reads OK to me - you can complete that bit either with a mouse wheel or by clicking + and -.
