Hi! Just adding some quick context:
-
It’s not an unorganized activity, we discussed it on this forum publicly and everything we do is public. Here is our organized activity page, with more context about our goals and methods: Organised Editing/Activities/BTCMap - OpenStreetMap Wiki

Many places are hopelessly out-of-date, we inherited an ancient (~2014) and largely unmaintained data set. We’re slowly verifying it and deleting everything which doesn’t exist or doesn’t belong to OSM (fake places, online-only places, etc). We respect the work of other mappers, that’s why we can’t just bulk delete anything slightly suspicious, it doesn’t mean we’re unaware of those issues.

Regarding the Netherlands: there are many communities who maintain their local data and they take it seriously, as far as I’m aware. Here is an example: https://www.arnhembitcoinstad.nl/

As far as I understand, Spar shops are franchised and some of them can accept bitcoins, nothing prevents them from doing that: Arnhem-based Spar is the first Dutch supermarket to accept Bitcoin.

I’m personally against
payment:*
tags for cryptocurrencies since they’re adding to much of a mental/maintenance burden and payment methods aren’t that durable and can change often. A singlecurrency
tag is enough IMO. There are other, deeper reasons (Lightning is not Bitcoin-specific, sopayment:lightning
use is ambivalent and a kind of a namespace squatting, etc)
Some of the mappers are less experienced than others, so mapping errors are unavoidable, but people put a lot of effort in improving the data quality. It’s much better now than it was a year ago, and it benefits every OSM user. We always respond to any complaints or suggestions promptly, feel free to contact us if you have any concerns, but I encourage everyone to be polite and act in good faith.
