Unite, Inspire, Innovate: My Transformative Journey at State of the Map Asia 2024

:date: Date: November 30th - December 1st, 2024

:earth_africa: A Transformative Experience
The State of the Map Asia 2024 in Cox’s Bazar was a game-changer. From thought-provoking keynotes to meaningful networking, it was a unique opportunity to connect with the global open mapping community. I was thrilled to receive my Certificate of Participation, marking my journey in the world of open mapping.

:fire: Insightful Discussions and Key Questions
During the event, Said Turksever from Meta raised two key questions:
Are there guidelines on where and what users can capture with Mapillary?
What are the future updates planned for the platform?
These sparked valuable conversations about ethical mapping and the future of geospatial data.

:handshake: Networking with Mapping Leaders
I had the privilege of meeting Nilabrata Sanyal from West Bengal, India, and Rabina Poudyal from Nepal — both Open Mapping Gurus. Our discussions about collaboration and mapping techniques were truly inspiring. It’s exciting to think about what we can accomplish together!

:globe_with_meridians: Connecting with Global Innovators
It wasn’t just about presentations — it was about the connections made. I had a meaningful conversation with Mikko Tamura from HOT, where we discussed the humanitarian impact of open mapping and the future of geospatial technology.

:mortar_board: A Milestone Achievement
As a proud member of YouthMappers at Eastern University, I was thrilled to join 7 other talented mappers from my university at SotM Asia 2024. The experience deepened my passion for open mapping and left me inspired to make a difference.

 Thank You, SotM Asia 2024!
Grateful for the opportunity to be part of such an inspiring event. SotM Asia 2024 reaffirmed that the power of open mapping lies in collaboration and innovation. Here’s to mapping the future!

Can we cut it out with the obvious AI-generated content?

I’m glad you found the event useful. I noticed you have a lot of changesets with the same description: “Mapping is a way to help people who are suffering on disasters.”

Some of them are confusing to me. I look forward to your further explanation of them.

[OT ] This is something typical with the Open Mapping Guru bubble, the titles of these posts/diaries are often similar: this summer I counted at least 21 diary entries with titles like “My OM Guru Journey” or something similar, e.g. My Incredible OM Guru fellowship Journey
or Open Mapping Guru Fellowship Journey
or This diary entry captures my journey, experiences, and the profound impact of the Open Mapping Guru Fellowship.

the wave now is about SotM Asia:

My Transformative Journey at State of the Map Asia 2024
or A Memorable Journey at SotM 2024
or My Journey to State of the Map Asia 2024 (this last one is the title of three different diaries from three different users).

Even before (in March) there was a wave of AI generated content directly here in the forum, in the form of comments (e.g. link). I suspect these diaries/comments are something required by their “fellowship journey”. To be honest I asked it in one of these diaries and the user confirmed so:

Yes, writing diary entries like “My OM Guru Journey” is indeed a required assignment as part of the OM Guru Fellowship program (among others).

I would suggest to drop these “task” in such courses because they lead only to noise in diaries, forums ecc.

@Bayazid_Ahmed All I can glean from that text is:

  • You attended an event (SOTM Asia 2024)
  • You either chose to or were told to write something here that said that you’d attended.
  • You did that, but unfortunately fed it through an AI “utter garbage generator” before posting it here.
  • You created the post above which is (a) almost entirely content-free and (b) reads exactly like spam.

The biggest problem is (b), and unfortunately it’s a fairly common result of AI-generated text. Text like that will get immediate negative feedback here, just like yours did, and the previous examples linked to above did. It actually makes what you have posted worse in quality than what you originally wrote, and it’ll make it more likely to get filtered by automatic spam filters elsewhere. The extra verbosity also means that people are much less likely to read what you have posted (I didn’t - it was obvious AI slop).

It’s perfectly acceptable to write things on this forum in less-than perfect English. It’s also positively encouraged to write things in a language that you are more familiar with and have others press the “translate” button to read it.
