I’d be kind of surprised if @UW_Amy_Bordenave, as a data consumer, would not find it convenient to simply read street names off the sidewalk ways.

it would be annoying if you want to prominently display names of named paths/footways/cycleways and do not want to display road names to which an unnamed sidewalk belongs to.

I guess that may be again a cultural issue (is sidewalk having a name or not?)

Yes, it’d be very useful for sidewalk ways to have tags indicating which roadway they associate to - and, for the reasons @Mateusz_Konieczny brought up, name=* is definitely not the tag I think we should use for that! is_sidepath:of=* is a bit unwieldy, but clear enough and would benefit from tooling support.
