Hello,
I maintain a map of Ancient DNA locations here: Ancient Human DNA - uMap - Online map creator
I have been working on some updates recently, but it seems performance is suffering a lot, especially today. Things that worked fine last week, like replacing layers, now result in timeouts. I was wondering if this is a temporary issue, or linked to the fact that there is too much data on my map.
If it is the second issue, is there something that I can optimize to counter this? Some settings I should change? Because the number of locations will only grow.
If it is the second issue, and nothing at all can be done, is there any alternative I could switch too? Thank you for your advice!
I’m not a big expert on uMap, but would it make sense to hide individual layers for now and only show the ones that are currently in use via the “visibility eye”?
Thanks for your reaction! When doing editing on the map it certainly seems to help to hide as much data as possible (even the data being edited), but for people visiting the map, I cannot hide layers. So they basically have to figure out themselves that performance improves when hiding some layers or zooming in, I think.
Making a small leaflet-based website with geojson shown in it is something that I would do.
But if words “html” or “geojson” are scary then it would probably not help. Still, it is reasonably doable - but will take effort when starting from scratch.
But yes, showing showing bunch of nodes should not lag so much. Unless I miss something here.
you can also try report heavy lag as a bug to whoever is making umap with hope that it will be considered as something to fix (if it was not reported to their issue tracker already)
