I’m very excited that Mapping USA 2025 is this week but it’s hard to believe January has gone by quickly! I mean it was just New Years, right?
Today, I want to share the launch of two TomTom editing challenges in MapRoulette. In both challenges, tasks for three states (Michigan, California, and Florida) have been loaded. Tasks in other states will be loaded in the coming weeks.
United States – Fix Inconsistent Highway Intersections: mpr.lt/c/50606 which has 40 tasks
This challenge targets situations where two highways intersect but are not connected. In most cases, this can be solved by connecting highways, although some tasks could result from duplicate geometry, or from possibly missing or incorrect layer tags.
United States – Add Roundabout Tag: mpr.lt/c/50828 which has 124 tasks
This challenge targets improvements when circular highway geometry is present in OSM but there is no junction=roundabout or junction=circular tagging present and may need to be added.
Thanks David! Is this an OK spot to suggest a future organized editing activity from TomTom? I also know I could create my own MapRoulette, but this related to a TomTom product.
I’ve been trying AmiGO, which is great, but one thing I’ve noticed with it is that since it pays attention to turn:lanes tagging, when turn:lanes doesn’t specify the same number of options as there are lanes, some inconsistent recommendations result. In one case, a missing right turn lane meant that AmiGO interpreted it as an implicit No Right Turn restriction (seems prudent of the app, but the data needed fixing). In another, turn:lanes only specified four lanes, but there were 5 lanes on the highway, so AmiGo said that there were two exit lanes (there was only one). Finding these cases where the lane count in turn:lanes mismatches with the lane count specified in the lanes tag would improve the behavior of the product.
Thanks for reaching out. I’m definitely open to suggestions for challenges or collaboration.
Let me chat with the product team using lanes to get a better idea of how the app is using lanes content. To keep this thread on track for these two challenges, I’ll followup with you on OSM US Slack.
I want to share that tasks for Texas are now available in MapRoulette. I also updated the challenge description with some guidance for mini-roundabouts based on community feedback.
The team running the process for generating tasks is working on the remaining states.
Thanks again to everyone that edited and shared feedback on the challenge!
