TomTom Map Roulette Challenge: Add roundabout tag

Hello community!
I’m happy to announce that we have launched a new challenge, “Add roundabout tag”, with the aim to fix roads that are missing roundabouts tags. Roads that in reality are roundabouts but without appropriate tags in OSM can cause issues with navigation and guidance which impact the usability and accuracy of the OSM map for all users.

You will find 55 tasks of this type in:
https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/50646

You can find more details about TomTom’s data improvement activities in Greece on our Github page:

I hope you will enjoy our challenges… and please let me know if you have any questions or specific mapping interest.
See you soon,
Dario

Dario

Hello Dario! I think its important to specify within the instructions of the challenge, that the legal default in Greece is opposite to most of the world (the person inside the circular junction does not have priority by default).

Therefore, in person survey or street level imagery is necessary to determine if there are yield signs present, which would be tagged as junction=roundabout, or none at all, necessitating junction=circular.

Popular is to add the junction=roundabout tag and then specifically to roundabouts, not ascertain the drawing direction is set correct (anti-clockwise for right hand drive) AND leave the oneway=yes… I’m thinking of maproulette cases in particular ;o)

While these are all useful pointers for roundabouts in general, the peculiarity of Greek traffic laws means that one cannot tag junction=roundabout without determining if priority truly is given to the person already in the junction.

Basically, Greek traffic law has no provisions specific to roundabouts/circular junctions. therefore, the standard rules for junctions apply: one must yield to the right. Within a circular junction, this has the unfortunate consequence that traffic within the roundabout must stop for traffic entering from ANY exit. Therefore, not a junction=roundabout, in the OSM sense.

The solution, instead of rewriting the traffic code, has been to give priority through yield/stop signage. The presence of this signage can be found with street imagery, survey, or (rarely) through the yield/stop signs being added by another mapper already.

Think this is kind of EU wide, even a single spot where there’s no right of way on the ring negates the rule.

For most other countries, if there is no further signage or traffic signals, then the person in the roundabout has priority.

This is typically a major point of friction in the summer, because foreign drivers (quite rightfully) assume that they have priority and get into accidents.

hello everybody, many thanks for your useful feedbacks. We are in the process of changing the description and we will inform you as soon as it is ready.
have good day!

Dario

In Greece we also have cases of STOP signs inside a circular way (so it’s not a roundabout).
