The Netherlands - Name tag for Educational Objects

Hello Netherlands OpenStreetMap,

I would like to consult you on this newly created MapRoulette challenge ( Netherlands - Add Name tag for Educational Objects) that might improve the accuracy and usability of educational facility data on the map. The goal is to validate and fix educational objects (such as schools, colleges, and universities) that are missing the name=* tag.

From our perspective, we think the following is Why is this important:

  1. User Experience: The name=* tag is crucial for users to quickly identify and locate educational institutions on the map. This enhances the overall user experience and makes navigation more efficient.

  2. Location-Based Services: Applications that rely on OSM data for location-based services, routing, and emergency response planning depend on accurate names for precise identification of educational facilities. This ensures that emergency responders and service providers can find these locations quickly and effectively.

  3. Data Quality: By adding the name=* tag, we improve the quality of OSM data, making it more reliable for a wide range of applications and analyses.

The team generated tasks based on Overpass Turbo to find educational objects without a name=* tag. An example query can be found here.

The challenge is currently only accessible to those who click on the challenge specific link and is not listed on the main MapRoulette website. However, if you find it valuable, I can make it discoverable and easily searchable for everyone.

Please reach out with any comments, feedback, or questions about this MapRoulette challenge, I would like to hear from you if this challenge is an add value to improving the map quality.

Thank you and have a great day,

Salim, TomTom

Not sure why you are linking to a query in Belgium, but here is the correct one:

A lot of these are cases where amenity=school is (ab)used instead of landuse=education for the many, many cases where one or more schools share facilities with a kindergarten. Over the past decade a lot of Dutch schools were converted into IKCs, where one building (and its grounds) are shared by multiple facilities (usually one or two schools and a kindergarten).

Resolving these is possible, but probably not something which should be done through a challenge unless you really, really manage to explain what landuse=education is, where it should be used, and how to properly map the schools inside it.

These may not have a name at all (and sometimes they do), or they may simply use the identity of the one school part of the IKC. The only reason people map them as an extra amenity=school is because Carto refuses to render landuse=education, and because some American mappers were very vocal about amenity=school also meaning ‘just the school grounds’.
