Suitability of imagery only for road smothness updates in the Philippines

I notice that Grab are planning to update smoothness values (among others) with information from imagery. Is this OK?

I certainly wouldn’t want to make any calls on road, track or path smoothness in the UK (other than perhaps “intermediate or better” or “intermediate or worse”) based just on imagery. However, I’m not in the Philippines and it might be that this sort of update is actually beneficial.

I see that they refer to using KartaView?

Cebu City will be a pretty quick job in that case!

& Manilla a bit more involved, but seeing that 90% doesn’t have KartaView images, I wonder if they’ll be using a different source?

What kind of imagery? From aerial, even high quality ones, it is going to be worse than useless.

From recent street level imagery seems to have no fundamental issues.

Thank you for the insights on our initiative to update road smoothness values using imagery data. Your feedback is important to us, and therefore, we would like to provide further information.

We recognize potential challenges in determining road smoothness solely on aerial imagery. As a solution, we will leverage our street-level imagery data to base all map updates on detailed ground-level views, ensuring a more accurate evaluation of road conditions.

Additionally, we acknowledge that our data coverage may be limited in certain areas, such as Cebu. Rest assured that we are committed to implementing a robust process to address this and that relevant sources will be published for map updates without existing imagery to ensure transparency for the community’s further evaluation.

We at Grab are steadfast in our mission to serve the community better through accurate maps and fostering a shared understanding of data updates. We are dedicated to working together and improving our maps for everyone’s benefit.

Should you have further concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Wow, an AI response to the issues we raised!
