I’d like to be able to more accurately represent the space occupied by a single tree object, obviously usually a rough circle of max span. Seems the current tiny green spot is just a place marker and or likely trunk placement?
The reason for the request is so closed to public green field sites used for First Person View radio control aircraft can more accurately identify the available flying area at (say) 2-4 metres above ground.
The woodland area node system is not very suitable for this detailed a purpose.
Ideal and easiest way would be to have the existing current “trunk” light green spot and an optional surrounding matching ring of choosable size.
Is there a way to do this or similar I’m missing please?
There’s the tag diameter_crown to provide an estimate of the diameter of the foliage. Combined with est_height (or height if you can measure it), it can help software for your use case.
I don’t know of any rendering that makes use of this data though.
Imagico did a series of blog posts about tree rendering. This one in particular shows what can be done to visualise the current way of tree tagging in osm.
WOW! That’s pretty much all I’d need. Thanks for showing that
To explain further, my first re-map (of possibly five locations) would need to show the horizontal span of eight mature trees that stand apart independently in a large “L” shaped field on sloping ground with surrounding tree’d field boundaries that the existing OSM area representation is perfectly adequate for. These trees are effectively used as pylons and are flown between and around at between 3/4 tree height and grass mowing (!), so a legend indicating the full height that could be blanked by the viewer would also be useful.
I don’t have the skills or the lifespan left to re-invent the wheel!
