Simple example of how to extract street coordinates in java

Hi,

I’m very new to OSM. I want to be able to download all the walkable ways within a specified geographical area and get their coordinates from a java program.

I must confess to being somewhat overwhelmed by everything out there and would be very appreciative if someone could point me at, or give me, an example of this in action.
