Hello
I’ve been editing for some months in OpenStreetMap and I wonder:
Is it bad to use websites/apps like Apple Maps or Google maps to make edits in OpenStreetMap?
I hope you understand and reply.
It is not allowed to map using Google Maps.
See this Frequently Asked Question for a more detailed answer.
There are tons of other ways to contribute to OpenStreetMap. Start small, with the places you know and visit every day. Then perhaps you can do small trips to wider places just for mapping, if you have time and means.
When you signed up for your account you were shown OpenStreetMap and you agreed to Licence/Contributor Terms - OpenStreetMap Foundation
Both are very clear that you cannot use sources that are not compatible with our, open, licence.
If copying off either was allowed, then what would even be the purpose of OSM? Besides a shoddy Google/Apple maps knockoff with less data?
That’s the power of OSM: nothing stops you from adding way more data than what you’d see on other mapping services (and OSM is more than what you see on the osm.org website; it’s a database, not a map, so its name is admittedly a bit misleading)
