I’m getting a puzzling experience when trying out the https://buurtnatuur.be (aka “Breng jouw buurtnatuur in kaart”) website, which I understand to be an instance of MapComplete:
As you can see, some UI elements are shown in English, and others in Dutch.
I searched GitHub for the question in the screenshot above (“Is dit gebied toegankelijk?”), but the results are confusing as it seems to appear all over the place in multiple repositories.
I tried checking out Weblate to see if it was a partial translation issue whose completion I could contribute to, but both searching in the top-level mapcomplete project, and narrowing down to the themes subproject, I was unable to find that string.
What am I missing? What would be the correct course of action? (cc-ing @Pieter_Vander_Vennet who is listed as the maintainer of that theme.)
Thanks for the context! I would like to know, though, if the theme is translatable — i.e. whether the fact it’s only available in Dutch is incidental and could change. I couldn’t find the strings in Weblate but maybe I was just using the search incorrectly.
In other words, why don’t the strings defined in buurtnatuur.json show up in Weblate?
You might get a better answer to this over on the issue tracker as there’s really only one person who can definitively answer this. If I’d have to guess then I’d say it’s probably because it was paid work and contains another organisations logo so changing the contents from something that they’ve approved might cause issues or need re-approval.
@InsertUser is completely correct about this. This is a special theme, and translations are disabled for this theme. It even used to force the general language setting into Dutch, but that seems to have watered down during the years.
Into nature is a similar thematic map, which has translations enabled and more layers; you might want to use this one
To provide some context, I’m asking because I found it listed in List of OSM-based services - OpenStreetMap Wiki, and even though it is said to be in Dutch in that table, there’s no indication that it couldn’t be eventually translated into other languages as well. Could it perhaps be either removed from that table (perhaps replaced by the “Into nature” theme?), or the special-purposeness of it be made more explicit in the description?
Given the current jarring experience with the website, shouldn’t this feature be reintroduced then? Not a feature request, just curious.
