Roof shapes: how to map houses with complex roofs?

I found demo.f4map.com and found it really great!

I now started to map trees (also for other purposes), hedges, roof shapes and other things that are useful for 3D maps.

But what about complex houses with multiple roof shapes?

For example this house

It consists of a main part with a roof:shape=gabled roof.

But also a lower part (garage) with a flat roof, and a separate part that is part of the house but flat.

How do I map this ?

without messing up maps?

Mapping these things as several surfaces/polygons with the same house number is the obvious way.

Every polygon has it’s own roof shape, all is fine.

They are snapped together so they act as one piece.

But doesnt this bloat maps, and cause unneeded confusion?

Is there a better way to do this? Can multiple polygons be set as part of a cluster?

What should be mapped and what not?

I think you need to create building parts for each portion that has a different roof type.

search or « openstreetmap 3d tutorial building part ». You will see various examples how building parts are assembled. A way to learn faster is to locate 3D building representations on 3D OSM based maps that have similarities with what you want to map. Then locate the building on OpenStreetMap to see how this is assembled.

Besides that, there also is roof:ridge which is a more micromapping kind of building mapping. However…

You need ´building:parts` anyway because that part with a flat roof has a different colour from the remaining house which is white.
