Road network improvements in Montenegro

Hello, my name is Andrew, I work for Apple on the Maps team. My team is interested in doing some work on the road network in Montenegro on OpenStreetMap, things like adding missing roads, making sure roads connect properly, fixing incorrect alignments, ensuring road classifications are consistent, and other similar issues. We may also do some improvements to other data such as coastlines, water, and others if we find issues, but the main focus to start is roads.

Are there places you know of that need improvement or types of problems you see frequently? Also I saw these guidelines, are they the most recent road classification guidelines used by the community, or are there any others we should be aware of?

We have a Github page here about the project:

Please let me know if you have any suggestions or feedback.

Thank you,

Great that you’r working on that systematically. I’ve been working on Montenegro map for somewhile but moved quite a time ago.

Highways network was in quite good shape, with some common mistakes like wrong status or not connected ways, or somebody rename residential streets to local business names.

Another big thing is that there are two alphabets in use, cyrilyc and latin, and I can’t say what approach for naming would be best.

Thank you, that’s good to know. Are the highway classification guidelines used in Montenegro the same as the general OSM guidelines?

Pretty much yes

Hello all,

This is Andrew again with Apple. In addition to the road network improvements I messaged about before, we are planning to work on some limited data corrections and improvements to OSM in Montenegro around coastal and water features and land use and land cover polygons, such as parks, university and hospital campuses, airports and similar features.

For example, sometimes coastlines and national parks are missing a correct tag, or are digitized inaccurately (maybe due to old low resolution imagery). We will make sure to follow the appropriate OSM and local guidelines. We have been doing a similar project around Africa and in other regions for some time.

I wanted to get your feedback and see if you had any suggestions or data resources we could use.

Also, thanks to those who contributed to the MapRoulette challenges I posted earlier! I have posted them all here:

There’s more information on our Github page:

Thank you,

Hello. There are a lot of unmapped residential roads in Montenegro, these roads are mostly dead end roads. Mapping of these residential roads is especially important in coastal areas where a lot of tourists come and want to find the location of the accommodation they have booked.

What can help you in mapping, is the geoportal of Montenegro, where you can see the property boundaries:

An orthophoto, which has views from 4 directions, can also help with mapping:

Kind regards.
