Proposed automated edit: building=building to building=yes

I remember someone asking in

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mechanical_Edits/Mateusz_Konieczny_-_bot_account/moving_building%3Dbuilding_to_building%3Dyes

discussion what my plan is when these building=building reappear

So this time I am proposing building=building to building=yes as a reoccurring edit in Mechanical Edits/Mateusz Konieczny - bot account/moving building=building to building=yes (again) - OpenStreetMap Wiki to avoid asking again 2032

building=building is an unexpected way to mark building without specifying its type

and therefore retagging this duplicate to building=yes would improve tagging without any information loss.

It makes life easier for various editor showing building type or doing anything special with building=yes

Looking at taginfo (filtering on the value building) I see there are 424 building=building’s and I am fine with fixing them (semi-)automated.

But looking at what else pops up with this filter I see quite some more values that could be fixed:

  • building=religious␣buildingbuilding=religious
  • building=farm_buildingbuilding=farm
  • church_buildingbuilding=church
  • building=commercial_buildingbuilding=commercial
  • etc. etc,

thanks!

added detection of this kind of issue to my tool

I expect that it will be listed with other fixes, but may take some time (for start I will need to review them)

There is also building=farm_auxiliary

Sounds good to me :+1:
Easy solution right

farm_auxiliary is a perfectly legit tag, listed in JOSM building presets listed above firestation. Have used countless times for buildings on farmyards other than building=farm, global use 2.2 million per taginfo

See below, well possible.

I think they mentioned not as something that should be retagged but that building=farm_building maybe should be building=farm_auxiliary, not building=farm

The first version that was emailed to me as a mailing list user hilariously contained " added detection of this kind of issue to Making sure you’re not a bot!"

yeah, and apparently this anti LLM scrapper tool shows catgirl while running some kind of test

appeared also on some UN sites, though apparently now https://policytoolbox.iiep.unesco.org/ uses custom images

I meant, it can be both, building=farm_auxiliary or building=farm; how can it be retagged automatically?

What is better?

  1. Keep building=farm_building
  2. Change it to building=farm with a small chance that building=farm_auxiliary would have been better

I vote for #2

  1. ask original mapper what they meant in message explaining difference between possibilities avilable

I would rather vote for #1. There are not so many of them that they do any harm. But if you want to get rid of them by all means better retag them to building=farm_auxiliary. There are many more of these than of building=farm. So the likelihood of it being wrong is lower.

What is the source for this “fact”?

If you did review a few I would have fixed them immediately…

Source was building | Keys | OpenStreetMap Taginfo :

with 37 cases asking every single mapper would take less effort than this discussion so far

Some of the tags are more than 10 years old, and some of the mappers who added them may no longer be available.

Then we could add notes asking for local help.

Yes, and likely longer than fixing these 41 cases:

Thanks, learned something new.

Of the 41 I did only retag 2 into building=farm.

I submitted (as OSMBC for 777th weekly) announcement about plans to make this edit

I did it due to General discussion about bad impact of bot edits on data consumers was: Proposed automated edit: retag surface=paving stones:30 - #5 by Richard
