I would like to create a print a road map that covers a large area - from Massachusetts to South Carolina, USA. I’d like it to be large enough to navigate from (24"x36" or so, though smaller would work) at a reasonable price (Printmaps is very expensive!). Any ideas on who I might find to do this?
The website print.get-map.org is good for making high-resolution printable PNGs but I don’t know if it will let you cover such a large area.
The problem with using the standard OSM map style for something like this is often that you have a choice of scale between “readable-size letters but only one in five places is named because there’s not enough space on the paper” and “letters so small you need a magnifying glass to read the map”
In your particular case - printing a map that goes from MA to SC - you might even want to do away with the “north up” map, and rotate the whole thing by something like 45° counterclockwise, so that the coast is vertical and you don’t waste half of the paper for ocean. But that’s advanced stuff and requires toying with the map style on a local machine.
There’s a list of services and software on the OSM on Paper page on the wiki. I haven’t used any of them for a proper printed map though so can’t give any specific recommendations.
I wish I new of an easy way to get the likes of Americana Map into a nice printable form. As far as style goes it would probably be a good starting point for what you’re trying to do.
