Pitch lit convention

The StreetComplete app has the quest asking if a pitch is lit and only offers the options yes and no. By definition from the wiki in many cases limited is applicable, since just because a pitch has flood lights installed, does not mean that they will always be active as defined in the wiki

the times of operation are assumed to be during the night, usually from evening civil twilight on Wikipedia to morning civil twilight

Thus, would like to know what the convention is for the lit-value before suggesting a quest extension in StreetComplete.

I think the wiki definition is intended for streets and public spaces that could be used at any time of night. It doesn’t really work for facilities that would normally only be lit when the facility is in use.

I have understood lit=yes on sports pitches to mean “there is lighting available when the facility is used after dark or in poor visibility”. The football pitch example on the leisure=pitch wiki page seems to be in line with this. It suggests lit=yes, presumably because floodlights are visible. I’m sure that is not intended to mean that the floodlights are switched on all night.

We had the same question in the german subforum recently and the answer was exactly the same (of course in german ).

What about the case where the floodlights are indeed staying on all night, even when the facility is not being used? Typical examples in Greece are pitches within schools, the floodlights of those stay on all night till morning, even if no one is in. They are in some cases automatic, similar to the street lights.

According to Overpass, there are plenty of leisure=pitch in Greece with lit=no and lit=yes, but none with lit=limited or lit=automatic. So I’d guess there is no real convention there to distinguish these situations, unless there is a 5th value of the tag in use that I didn’t check for.
