I’m maintaining the Wiki page. The “people involved” section is badly outdated.
I could simply remove it, since there is an automatic list of active mappers.
But, maybe there’s something nice and useful about a list of people who actively participate in discussions. So I thought about this:
“Active mappers” simply links to the neis-one list, or to some other auto-maintained list.
“Active in the community” - A manually maintained list. Every year or so, we can post in this thread and ask anyone who wants to be included this year to “ping” the post by liking it.
I’m imagining a list of people with short descriptions, to give a vibe of a community. e.g. zstadler - israel hiking map. Neatnit - really likes buses , etc.
Those no longer active would be naturally removed on the next ping. Those not interested wouldn’t be in the list, and the few continuously active and interested users would.
If there’s trolling, we could add some very basic criteria like having a certain small total number of posts in Israel-related forums+notes+changesets, and the first of these being more than 3 months old or so.
How did you end up copying that URL? “WikiProject Israel” has been a redirect to Israel since 2019!
I like this idea, but it does require someone to actually bother to do it every year. Will you do it? Will you remember next year?
Might be useful to add a note about the system to the top of the list. Perhaps a link titled “About this list” to a separate wiki page explaining the system, so anyone who stumbles into it in the future can volunteer to probe it and update if it’s been over a year since the last probe. And of course the month of last probe should be listed.
I don’t really understand what was the original goal of this list. As a contact list for new mappers? I doubt this ever worked.
I’d only keep the link to automatic statistics page. The main cons of this - nothing will link to personal wiki pages some users have. So, maybe, let’s create a separate wiki page (e.g. Israel Mappers) with a static list of all users who want to be listed there with their pages links. This way even non-active users will stay listed for history purposes. If user doesn’t have a wiki page - link to their “how I contribute” page.
It looks like the intended purpose might have been a Wiki directory. The list starts with Wiki links only, and later on deviates, with the more recent additions.
This was part of my dilemma and it was a bit sad to remove old names. But they’re preserved in the history. If you’d like to, feel free to maintain it. I decided I don’t want to dedicate time for that.
