OSM Mass Usage

To whom it may concern,

We are a startup team who are developing a map-based smartphone app and considering to use Openstreet Map service. Our app will work very similar to ‘Swarm’ and ‘Four Square’ which allows users to make tags on the map. We aim to make it a massively used product.

Due to your latest announcement about tile usage, you announced that it will not be a free service any more (Sourve: https://operations.osmfoundation.org/policies/tiles/))

Following the latest updates, is there a fixed pricing list/quota for your services? If so, can you share it with us?

Thanks

No, no, we are not a commercial project. The limitation is due to finite hardware resources.

Please read the text you linked again, I think it explains well why we can’t mass serve tiles.

I think your best bet would be to use map tiles from Mapbox or Mapzen. They have a number of plans available.

Your other option is to download the updates to the map database itself, and render the tiles yourself, and serve them from your own severs.

The database, not the tiles,is the real product of OSM.

You should expect to pay at least the actual cost of storing and serving the tiles.

As others have said, OSM has never been a free service. Various providers are listed at https://switch2osm.org/providers/ , depending on what you want one of those may work. If you don’t have money to pay for anything initially then https://switch2osm.org/manually-building-a-tile-server-16-04-2-lts/ will take you through setting up your own tile server. Depending on the region that you’re interested in that needn’t be a huge server. If you’re targetting mobile then vector tiles would make sense. If so I’d start reading at http://www.paulnorman.ca/blog/2016/11/serving-vector-tiles/ .
