On Japan maps, some names seem to be in a form of Chinese pronunciation

Hello,
I notice on OSM and on related sites/apps (Kurviger and OSMAnd+) that on many Japanese maps when they have roman alphabet characters seem to be following a Chinese pronunciation base for the kanji, rather than Japanese. This also means text → Speech routing apps often use this pronunciation.

Is there any way I can change this? I’ve asked around the app (OSMAnd+) and the web routing site I use (Kurviger) since I see this on the site and the app, but it seems no answer yet.

I have Japanese and English on phone and PCs - no Chinese.

There’s nothing we can do in OSM, the app developers need to detect the language e.g. by setting it using country boundaries. What would be needed is to trace which part of the software stack is doing the transliteration and fix it there. It can be done. I think Organic Maps does this correctly.

A name:ja-Latn=* tag could be added to ensure correct romanisation. See https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Multilingual_names#Japan
