In Edinburgh, most rear gardens are mapped in some way. I believe there may have been a university project many years ago that did this.
Is there a reason why front gardens are not generally mapped?
Reason I ask is about 30 anonymous notes have appeared in Portobello, Edinburgh, noting front gardens are unmapped.

There is no reason why we map back gardens but not front gardens in
OSM. Feel free to add them.
As for why they are not mapped would have been a decision made by the
original mapper that mapped the back gardens 9 years ago. If they were
still active I would say ask, but as they aren’t just go ahead and add
them.

On a related note, I notice that Edinburgh appears to be largely mapped without landuse=residential
areas in favour of mapping more concretely (eg. private gardens).
I’ve been mapping parts of Glasgow breaking huge landuse=residential
areas covering whole suburbs into smaller block-level parcels.
I had concerns over privacy and micromapping/outdated data lingering in the OSM if mapping private gardens, but if that’s the DoneThing™ I’ll consider the Edinburgh approach.
