Mapping jetsprint courses

Recently mapped Relation: 20301323 | OpenStreetMap which is an excavated jetsprint Jetsprint - Wikipedia “course / track” which is only filled with water & used once or twice a year, but the channels stay there all the time.

After doing quite a bit of searching, I found https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:sport=jetsprint?uselang=en which gave me some guidance on how, but also raised some questions?

It says The order is not consistent and is chosen randomly before the event, so it is not possible to map the jetsprint course as a way, only an area, so they are usually mapped as a basin or reservoir, sometimes with inner “islands”, sometimes not e.g. Relation: 18057020 | OpenStreetMap & Relation: ‪Round Mountain Speedway‬ (‪18094033‬) | OpenStreetMap

I’m wondering if that is actually the best way of mapping them?

Could they be mapped as either Tag:waterway=canal - OpenStreetMap Wiki or even Tag:highway=raceway - OpenStreetMap Wiki + natural=water?

@AntiCompositeNumber @watmildon The two of you either created the wiki &/or mapped them previously so your input welcome!

Some of these really do straddle the lines between “weird shaped lake/reservoir” and “set of canal/ditch like structures”. I had been marking them all as lakes (some intermittent) out of convenience.

I don’t see a problem adding center-line ways showing the possible course through lines even if the specific route is meaningless.. I’m sure other racing sports can reconfigure their specific track turn choices.I would still have the outer area feature similar to how folks have mapped lazy rivers as both the leisure=swimming_pool areas AND a center-line attraction.

I would suggest against highway=raceway, this is not a kind of highway, maybe waterway=raceway could fit?

Suggested highway= as that was what had =raceway listed!

Yes, waterway=raceway could work? Just found a course that hasn’t yet been mapped, so will have a play later.
