Hi Valeria

Could you explain how you detect “missing” roads and give some samples (we are aware that quite a few service roads in industrial complexes are unmapped, and some driveways).

BTW I hope you are aware of OSM - GWR Street and Place Names Comparision

Simon

Hello, Simon! Thank you for your interest towards our mapping activity.

Our main goal is to enrich road coverage where possible to improve the experience of our users in Europe. We have our own mechanisms for detecting missing roads. They are run by internal tools built by Mapbox developers on the basis of anonymized GPS traces. The traces are processed and compared to OSM data and our internal data. As a result, we receive some predictions of the places with potentially missing roads. All of them are going through manual validation of our mappers and only in case a missing road can be confirmed by sources eligible for mapping on OSM, we will add it on the map.

The scope of work in Switzerland will depend on what these mechanisms bring us. If there is not much to edit, we will not make any excessive edits for sure. Besides that, we are not going to change other users’ edits without compelling reasons and preceding communication with the community.

Could you please clarify what kind of samples you exactly mean?

Well a couple of examples of missing roads, coordinates would be enough.

Thank you for the clarification! As we are making announcements prior to the beginning of our work in the location, the dataset in Switzerland will be created in approximately one week. As soon as the data is available, I will contact you with examples of missing roads detected by our mechanism.

Hello, Simon! As per our agreement, I am providing some examples of missing roads detected by our mechanisms in Switzerland:

  1. OpenStreetMap (the data appears to be outdated based on a comparison of the available satellite imagery sources);
  2. OpenStreetMap (there is a minor/unclassified road missing according to the latest imagery);
  3. OpenStreetMap (a service road is missing, however, given its minor impact, we will assess the local approach to mapping service roads in Switzerland to determine the necessity of making such edits).

We hope this information will clarify the specifics of our mapping activity. If there are any questions or concerns regarding the cases mentioned above, we encourage open discussion and constructive feedback.

Thanks!

There is actually major construction for a new train station there that is supposed to be completed by the end of 2025, see
Avry-Matran | CFF . I suspect that the situation will have already changed again since the imagery was taken and it would probably be best for somebody local to survey.

The other two examples seem unproblematic.

Simon

Thank you for the valuable feedback and information regarding this case. We will follow your recommendations and refrain from making any modifications in this area as we do not possess evidence of ongoing construction. Therefore, we agree that the optimal approach in this case is undoubtedly to collaborate with users who have local knowledge of the situation.
