The Operations Working Group plans to host a copy of OpenStreetMap Spyglass (formerly OSM X-RAY). The goal is to replace the current data layer on openstreetmap.org.
Since this is a self-contained new service, we see it as a chance to bring in new people to help with ops and sysadmin tasks. If you have relevant experience, we’d love your help. If this sounds like you, please get in touch with us at operations@osmfoundation.org. We can mentor you on the specifics of our OpenStreetMap setup, including our chef setup and how we configure things.
For the technical details, the service will involve
- an osm2pgsql database,
- a go server,
- nginx to terminate SSL and proxy the go server,
- various shell scripts to tie parts together,
- systemd unit files for automation, and
- anything else you identify as necessary.
We have examples of similar components for other services so you’re not starting from a blank slate. This won’t be deployed to the main page until after migration from leaflet to Maplibre is finished, so there’s no time crunch.
