Hello, I’d like how to set the language of labels when reading the map. I mean, when I’m in China for instance, not seeing English label of city X but French label, preferably. It’s bizarre since the city X has name:fr set.
I have these settings in my account " Langues préférées
And if you are still looking for raster tiles close to the osm-carto standard style, the Openstreetmap FR local chapter has a tilelayer with french labels, see layers.openstreetmap.fr - Tuiles pour contrôle de données / Tile service with dataa checks - though at the moment the tile renderer tile cache seems to be down. That layer uses name:fr labels if available in osm data.
It’s not exactly clear what you mean. The answers so far seem to think you’re talking about raster tile languages, but I wonder if you’re actually asking about the osm.org website itself.
Can you give an example URL that shows the problem?
Edit: The reply below makes it clear that this is about raster map tiles.
Well, for instance, https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=13/34.2566/108.9765 is shown all in Chinese characters whilst Xi’an is quite a big city having latin script certainly set. So makes the map a bit un-understandable for non-chinese reader
lat/long is part of the url (in the hash, it is: #/{zoom}/{lat}/{long} - this should be the same you have at your atownsend map.)
You can also search by lat/long using the search form (“Recherche”), e.g. enter “39.9059,116.3913” (so comma separated) to e.g. find the “Place Tienanmen”.
A bit bizarre. Is this website in french in fact a kinda mirror of the true openstreetmap database ?
I was hoping I could edit in the native Openstreetmap database and see the labels in french (if they exist)
For that, the tile.openstreetmap.fr example from above would be a better choice as well as the americana map with language set to French (only) with local language as fallback.
Americana is updating pretty fast (but not in minutes as the osm standard layer does), and this link here would help about the language: OpenStreetMap Americana - so you might want to use that for editing and wait for the next day to see it appearing on the map.
