Is there a way to show a heat map generated from GPS traces?

I am a new user, so maybe I missed this. I didn’t find any other matching topics either.

There is an area that has a paved walking trail, but it cannot be seen in the satellite imagery because of the tree cover. The GPS traces of this particular area are not very accurate because the tree cover and hill block the satellites. However, if there was a heat map where multiple GPS traces could be displayed simultaneously, one could make a pretty good guess at the location and shape of the trail.

Is there a way to display such a heat map?

You can activate the GPS Traces in OSM as an own layer, check: OpenStreetMap
Or you can try if the Strava Heatmap will help you: Strava Global Heatmap

Thanks, enabling the public traces in OSM works.

See the OSM Wiki page on Strava for more info on sourcing heatmaps from that service as well as a browser extension that helps pull in the correct imagery URL for use in the JOSM editor.

Stava tiles work in iD editor too. Just insert forementioned wiki parameters in iD “custom imagery” placeholders. In many areas the quantity of traces is well beyond public OSM ones.
