If I’m viewing a map of my local area, I can see lots of post boxes, churches, bus stops etc… but how do I view the details that have been entered against them without going into edit mode? thank you

Did you try to click at the + sign in the upper right corner of the standard map at www.openstreetman.org ?
Please select the Overlay “Data”.
