Oh, indeed! I linked to the incorrect wiki page. Thanks for the note! The rationale for deprecating building=abandoned is explained in that Wiki page thusly:

Therefore use an appropriate building=* value, plus abandoned=yes if the building needs major repairs prior to reuse (for example, broken windows, leaking and damaged roof, etc).

In theory abandoned:building=* could be also used, but it is generally a poor idea as disused building is still a building.
