I am newish to editing OSM, and I am afraid to delete the wrong things. However, I noticed some segments of a road that, due to naming and way splitting, appear to be two roads.
How should this be handled? Should I delete all of the tiny way/segments and extend one of the way/segments to cover the full length of the roadway? (I am concerned about deletion). Should I remove the name_1 on the segments that have multiple names?
Specifically, this is the area of Mitchell Avenue Southeast and Mitchell Road Southeast in Port Orchard, WA, USA.
Attach a link to the road [if you are sure about one road and not several, delete it and one big road]
By the way, if this is the solution you need, you can mark my answer as the solution.
Oops, I forgot to mention something. No need to be afraid. After editing and saving, indicate that you want help checking your edit. Then, if you made a mistake, it will be sent to other users and they will check it for you. If you didnโt, and if you did, they will fix it. Then you can be sure.
I have made changes that I think fix this without deleting the roads by deleting name_1, where I found it to be different.
per advice of @ืืจืฅ_ืืฉืจืื_ืืืคื_ืืืื_2025 , I requested a review on my changes.
First things first, itโs normal for a road in OSM to appear in two pieces in some circumstances. That might be because a tag differs (here a name is strangely different at one end of the road), or because a bus route only uses part of a road. Where a tag differs it might be something not immediately obvious like the number of lanes or the width of the road, or the surface quality.
In this example, if you know (through local knowledge) that one of the two names is wrong then by all means correct it (as you have done), but I wouldnโt initially worry about using iDโs โmergeโ feature to merge them together.
Yes, the โdownloadโ button is a bit well hidden - itโs over at the left-hand side of the screen against each relation. However, you probably donโt want to delete anything here, just merge them. If you use โshift clickโ to select more than one thing a plus sign appears which you can use to merge things. If all the tags and relation memberships are the same itโs OK to do that, but itโs not essential.
I suspect that thatโs a hangover from the import of these roads from the US census TIGER dataset many years ago. How to deal with TIGER roads is something that the US community will have far more experience of than me.
