How to fix a name not appearing on the map?

Hi all, first post here! Hopefully this is a super simple fix.

I created a new OSM place for my business:

Old Steel Bicycle Repair and Recyclery - 101 South Cayuga Street, Ithaca NY

When I search for my business, it is listed, and even shows with the proper symbol. But no name is printed on the map itself for the business, unlike all other businesses nearby. I’ve tried everything that seems relevant - what am I missing? What has to be done to make this appear?

Welcome to the forum.

Probably all you need to do is clear your cache so that your browser updates the tiles in that area. As you can see, the name appears for me:

The exceptionally long names (bordering on descriptions) of your business and the neighbouring Marrakech Pizzeria & Mediterranean Cuisine are probably risking running out of space, but so far you seem to have both got away with it! Let’s hope Smith’s Fine Gentlemen’s Clothing Emporium doesn’t open in an adjoining building…

Edit: the screenshot is from the Tracestrack Topo layer - I forgot that I was using that. It seems the long names do end up being suppressed in the standard layer as mentioned by @Mateusz_Konieczny in the next post.

this area has multiple addresses competing for space with label of the POI

it seems that icon is shown but label is not - but as you noted it can still be found

some of nearby POIs are also without labels

note that in more bicycle-focused style, at Node: ‪Old Steel - Bicycle Repair and Recyclery‬ (‪8796637014‬) | OpenStreetMap it is well visible

so POI looks fine and it will be findable in CoMaps/OrganicMaps

it is also possible that actual name is rather “Old Steel” and it would be more likely to fit? (but not guaranteed to fit in all map styles!)

Also: thanks for adding the POI!

@alan_gr Thank you! I’m using a desktop browser to view the map, so I wonder if that has relevance here. Looks like you are using mobile? I have don crtl+f5 and it still doesn’t show. Angry Mom Records, located nearby in the same building as Autumn Leaves Bookstore, seems to have the same issue. I’d love to solve for them as well if possible.

@Mateusz_Konieczny Well, that’s cool at least. Good to be seen on cycle maps!

Sorry, I edited my original post which may have caused confusion. It doesn’t appear for me in the default map either. I simply forgot that I was using the Tracestrack Topo layer. Hopefully you should see the name if you switch to that layer.

@alan_gr Ah yeah, I totally see it there. But considering I’m hoping this is visible to random college students looking for the shop, I’m hoping to get it on the default map.

So Weird! Angry Mom and I both appear on the “Humanitarian“ layer, but AM doesn’t appear on any of the other layers AFAICT.

It’s not that weird really. There is a lot of data in a small space here and different renderers make different choices. On the Angry Mom point, it may be relevant that the Humanitarian layer doesn’t display a parking icon, which on some other layers is very close to Angry Mom.

There is probably not much you can do about this but as suggested above, if there is a case for the name being simply “Old Steel” it might help your chances - but certainly not guaranteed.

A complication in your building is that there a lot of separately mapped address nodes which take up space on most renderers.
