How To Add Points, Lines and Areas Based on Coordinates

I am new here, and to the challenge of editing OpenStreetMap. I tried searching for any answer, but the search results are only as good as the query, which must have been weak as I found nothing really relevant. I even Googled with no real solution.

Is it possible to create areas (large area boundaries for example), lines and points using know co-ordinates? Perhaps a way to import the points?

I am willing and able to self teach if someone would be able to point me in the direction of some relevant resources to help me.

Hi and welcome to OSM

I don’t know if there is an easier way, but I would create a GPX-File, load this into JOSM and convert into a data-layer. This layer can be merged with the data loaded from the OSM-server.

It is technically possible to do both of those, but there are challenges.

One of them is that with large areas, you’ll need to combine the data with what is already in OSM, something that you’d typically do in a regular OSM editor.

Another is that is if you’ve obtained the co-ordinates from a third party, the licence under which they were made available needs to be compatible with OSM.

If you give an example of the sort of thing that you would like to add, people would be able to provide much more help.

Sure. NavCanada, a public entity publishes documents and maps, public domain that define air sector boundaries, airways, and waypoints from coast to coast. I’d like to map these if possible (not for official flight purposes, but more for personal interest in flight tracking.

Does such belong in OSM?

This might be considered an import and would be governed by:

It could very well be that I misunderstand the concept of Open Street Map. Basically, I’m referring simply to using OSM as a base map for me to create private layer(s) of this data, not to necessary be a public contribuition. Something similar to making a private layer in Google Earth or Google Maps.

Then you might take a look at uMap - OpenStreetMap Wiki

Yes! This is more in line to what I was wanting. Thank you for sharing. The question now remains how to I import to my custom map, points, lines and shapes based on the known coordinates. I kinda figured the points out by changing the coordinates properties for the point, but that may get pretty tedius having to do that thousands of times.

What kind of format is your data in originally? Umap is fairly smart about interpreting various data formats (gpx, geojson, csv). If it is any kind of standard geographical format, often Umap will display something meaningful even on the 1st attempt without you doing anything, which you can then refine.
