How do I accurately map a forest?

My place has a lot of inaccurately mapped forests, and i want to know all of the factors that go into mapping forests accurately, for example, what to do when a field is inside of a forest or how to use less nodes mapping a forest because the maximum nodes allowed is 20000 (i think).

Key point is to use an appropriate level of detail, typically highly detailed would be a couple of meters between points, but if the source material or your patience doesn’t support that, less detail is completely OK.

You are limited to 2’000 (not 20’000) nodes per way, however larger areas can be constructed with “multipolygons”, these are what you should use if you (really) need to model holes in the forest.
