How can we improve POI Mapping Accuracy?

POIs often change quickly. How do we track new businesses, park updates or facility chnages in your area? Kindly Share the tools, tips or local resources that help keep OpenStreetMap Accurate. Your experience can guide others and strengthen the community’s mapping quality.

The Every Door is quite user friendly for confirming if POIs are still present, and adds check_date

StreetComplete and SCEE (fork of StreetComplete with additional, more experimental with the quests and the UI) both make short work of this.

In the UK, the Government requires the registration of all businesses serving food, and local councils then inspect them and given them hygiene ratings. The results are published as open data and an OSM mapper has made a tool FHODOT to show matches to OSM data and flag discrepancies.

More generally, various chain stores have websites that list their branches. There’s a project called AllThePlaces that collects the branch data. I’ve made a tool called Chain Reaction that compares these branch lists to OSM store data in the UK. Any discrepancies are shown in my Survey Me tool, which aims to give mappers on the ground things to check out nearby.

There’s other UK-wide datasets of POIs that I’ve also got comparison tools for, and these also feed into Survey Me.
