High Resolution 360 Imagery in Montreal 🇨🇦

Hi OSM Canada community,

The Montreal Municipality (Ville de Montréal) has started using Mapillary for monitoring and inspecting the road and cycling network in Montreal, Canada. They began using Mapillary on September 9th, 2024.

The Montreal Municipality has already uploaded over 1 million high-resolution 360 street level imagery captured with Trimble mobile mapping equipment. They have covered 3,000 kilometers of the road network, and this high resolution 360 imagery is available to everyone through Mapillary.

If you’re mapping in Montreal, I just want to bring this dataset to your attention. You can enable Mapillary layer on iD or Rapid editor and improve OSM data.

Best,

This is wonderful! I am wondering if I can convince my local municipality to do the same. Are you are of a business case or similar document that explains their reason for this effort?

Thanks @joel56dt for following up. @ une_abeille has started with conversation with City of Montréal, it would be great to get une_abeille’s input.

I’m also looking for ways to connect with City of Toronto however no luck so far.

I just reached out via the City’s email address for open data asking them to please consider adding their imagery to Mapillary. They didn’t actually respond to me, but a short time later I started noticing their imagery on Mapillary.

I knew that they had some such imagery because of news coverage of their work taking 360° images of all of Montréal’s cycle infrastructure, but was pleasantly surprised to see how much coverage they’ve taken by car as well!
