Help with bicycle route mapping

Hi all,

I am trying to fix up the 6 short bicycle routes in my city as what is included in OSM is very different from the official maps. I have already added the streets and paths for the first 3 which are what I am focusing and then I’ll do the others.

I am using OSMand+ for testing the routes as I edit them, to get them to work properly in it.

I will focus on route 3 for now:

How does one map a route which follows one road, then does a little loop, then back along that road back to the same start/finish point? OSMand routes from the start of the loop then down the first road.

  • I have added relation roles forward and backward according to the way directions to code in what direction to go around the loop is.
  • How should I tag where the route begins/ends, and that the first few roads/paths should be travelled along twice? Do I add each segment to the relation twice?

Here is the official PDF of the route: https://www.nelson.govt.nz/assets/Leisure/Downloads/trafalgar.pdf

Here is the relation link:

To make it easier, I will wait until we solve these problems then see what problems with the other ones are and ask them later.

I’d like to give it a try, even though I don’t have a master’s degree in bicycle relations

Current version #6:

My proposal (not uploaded):

In a first step, I would have put all relation members in the correct order. For a round tour, the first and last elements in the relation must be the same, namely where the round should start.
Put all relation members in a loop without forward/backward:

Since I’m sure that the loop forms a loop (at least JOSM indicates this to the right of the individual elements as a circular route), I would add forward and backward:

I have exported my layer in JOSM as GPX and imported it into bikerouter.de and I think it looks good.

I haven’t uploaded anything, the changes are only local on my machine. If you want me to upload them, just let me know.

Thanks for trying this out - can you please upload the changes?

I have been scared of JOSM for a while, it’s always been way too confusing and backwards compared to iD so maybe I’ll need to use it, at least for this relation work.

Sure, here you are: Changeset: 162004300 | OpenStreetMap

I also think that JOSM is unbeatable for editing relations. And once you’re in, you never want to go back, I would say.
