Foundation category

Category name

Foundation
(short URL name could be osmf)

Is this top-level category or a subcategory?

This could make sense as a top-level category because there is considerable potential for sub-categories. Speculatively, these may include working group subcategories or even board circulars (i.e. polls with a finite set of eligible participants).

Description of its purpose and which open mapping groups will serve

This category would allow the discussion of matters related to the OpenStreetMap Foundation. To start with, the OSMF board would like to experiment with cross-posting questions to the community (which are regularly posted on osmf-talk) to this forum.

Why this new category is needed instead of being hosted as part of the existing ones?

To mirror existing functionality of the osmf-talk mailing list, write access should eventually be restricted to members and associate members of the OSM Foundation. This could not be implemented using tags.

Is this a new space or it’s already existing in other platform(s)? Where?

This already exists as

What the current volume of messages in the former platform (per week/per month)

Can exceed 100 messages/month during election season. Usually less than that.

Is there a transition plan for the old platform to this new one? (please link or describe)

Existing topics from the “OSMF” subforum should be merged into this new category during the forum migration.

If the osmf-talk mailing list is replaced at some point, existing messages will likely be archived rather than migrated. A prerequisite would be the possibility to link OSMF membership with user accounts. @Stereo plans to work on exporting a list of OSMF members’ OSM user names as a first step. (This information is already requested during the OSMF membership sign-up process.)

(Optional) A link or list of the category specific guidelines

none, OSM Etiquette Guidelines should apply

List the usernames of the category moderators

For now, this can be moderated by the existing team for the General Discussions forum. Once the osmf-talk mailing list is officially migrated, it is likely that the recently formed moderation team for the mailing lists would become category moderators on this forum.

The #osmf category is now live. Please let me know if you want to add a specific logo for the category.

Thanks!
