Forums governance team meeting - 2024-02-01

The @forums-governance team will have its next meeting tomorrow. Guests are welcome to attend the meeting.

Additional info for joining the call

Testing microphone/audio

You might want to go through the microphone/audio test of BigBlueButton (which occurs before one joins a video room) in advance.

If you don’t hear yourself or the test sound during the audio test, please select “no” and choose a different hardware option from the drop-down list.

Low bandwidth

You can disable receiving the video and desktop sharing streams. After you have joined the room, click on the three dots on the top right of the black video-window.

Optional account on osmvideo.cloud68.co

You can also create a free account on https://osmvideo.cloud68.co if you don’t have one already. An account is not required to join this meeting.

If you create one, it will provide you with your own home video room for OSM-related meetings and you can also be added to the access lists of other rooms, so that you can start them.

More documentation and tips are available on BigBlueButton - OpenStreetMap Wiki.

I would point out that the calls for a saner approach for access to the migrated low to very low volume forums have not been answered and should be on the agenda too.

Regarding the topic of “Additional Emoji Reactions”:

Ideally, the new OpenStreetMap Foundation (OSMF) strategy
should guide the development of a new strategy for the OSM Community Discourse Forum.
The topic of “Additional Emoji Reactions” should be a part of this.
At a minimum, it should align with the direction of the new OSMF strategy, as noted in: “The Strategic Plan was adopted by the OpenStreetMap Foundation board on 2023-09-28.”
Key points to consider are:

Therefore, if there’s a serious proposal to shift our common Discourse forum more towards “Western meme trends”, please provide a thorough justification for how this supports the new OSMF Strategy.

However, I do support emoji reactions that express unity and community sentiment.
For example, a “custom OpenStreetMap emoji reaction” that represents OSM community unity and aligns with the goals of the OMS community would be great.
This is feasible since it’s possible to extend Discourse with a custom OSM SVG reaction.

Regardless of the above, an “Off-topic” section could also be introduced, where more relaxed rules would apply.

In any case, I trust that the Forum Governance will make a wise decision on this matter.
I also apologize to everyone with whom I have debated on this topic.

We didn’t get around to that topic this time, but I have made a note for our next meeting in 2 weeks. You’re already welcome to share any input or suggestions on the topic in the meantime.
