Hi,
Wonder if anyone could help me. I am a keen off-road cross country/adventure motorcyclist. I want to download parts of OSM (specifically Greece) After I have downloaded them I want to create my own routes on the map of places I have been gradually"filling up" the map.
If I was to do this using a GPS OSM based application the computer could probably- a/not follow the route
b/ route would be huge.t
This also wouldn’t work because as I explore new routes I would want to add those roots to the existing routes I have travelled .
I tried photographing sections of the map and "drawing’on the photo with a blue line but in my opinion it needed too many photos.
I’m sure there is some kind of software or something that would enable me to do this but I have no clue where to start.
Can anybody suggest how i should go about this task.
Thanks very much
Hey,
OsmAnd sounds like the most proper mobile app for what you may want, although I don’t fully understand what you want. You want to route in areas where there’s little to no OSM coverage regarding roads/paths, and you want to take photos of the places those exist so to map them later?
OsmAnd has a plugin that allows you to take pictures/videos/audio notes with GPS on, so to help you later find easily where you were so to map it.
If I understand you correctly, want something to show “where you’ve already been”.
For cycling, there’s https://wandrer.earth, for running (and cycling, too), there’s https://streetferret.com/ (by @ZeLonewolf), I’m not aware of something like that for motorcyclists.
For me personally, I have https://www.mytracks4mac.info/ tracking my phones position. The recorded tracks can be exported as GPX files, and in the end produces something like Wo war ich im 2023? – habi.gna.ch (blog post is in German and was using another software but you should get the gist by looking at the embedded map).
I saw https://www.routegenerator.net/ mentioned some time ago, which may help?
Don’t know anything else about it though, other than that link!
Hi there to everyone. Thanks for the replies so far.
sorry i took so long to reply , an illness, and some personal stuff has held me back
I looked at route generator, it didn’t quite appear that this met my needs due to it being photographs and having to expand large areas in photographs.
At the moment I am investigating OSMand have posted in the community there a refinement of my question. You could think of this by say taking a Greek area and creating a GPX file with a route, but then adding new waypoints to that route LATER WITHOUT forcing the route planner to go back over roads, that are already marked on the previous stages .
This will give the route a much cleaner and tidy appearance. It will gradually fill up the areas I have passed with blue (or whatever colour) lines.
I wonder if there is a limit to the size of the route I could create.
In case you just want to simply visualize the places you have been, you could record them in OsmAnd (or any other app). Then you can either display them in OsmAnd or save the GPX files and throw them into umap (for example umap openstreetmap.org)
thank you that might be just what im looking for .i will try this and also osmand that someone recommended
Hi i “think” that you may have found exactly what im looking for with UMAP.THANK YOU!!
here is a screenshot of what i wanted to typically do.
I drew a “polyline” of a dirt rd route i have ridden on my enduro motorcycle.
After 10 mins with the site i can easily understand how to add ANOTHER polyline of another nearby route i had also ridden WITHOUT having the site automatically create a "route’ or even include asphalt roads.
This is EXACTLY(it seems) what i wanted to do.
I can load the (saved) map and just keep adding more polylines which represent the places i have ridden! A very nice memory.
If you ever come to western crete let me know
i will persevere and hopefully this will work out.
Glad it works well for you
If you don’t want to draw everything by hand (especially longer routes) and you don’t want to record your rides directly, you can also use https://maps.openrouteservice.org/ to create the route. You can then download it
And the upload it to umap
will try that perhaps.I have to refer toall my old gpx files to remember where ive been as ive been to so many places here!!
Maybe I am missing something, but if you have the old gpx files, why do you need to draw anything instead of uploading the files? Is it because you want to correct or smooth out random errors in the gpx files?
reason is i have lots of GPX files covering places I have been. I am not exaggerating when I say that soon probably across western Crete I will have covered 90% of the dirt roads that exist .This inevitably means re-crossing routes, .and a GPX route thats very convoluted taking me back over the same places.
i dont want that and dont need the asphalt roads in my personal “memories map” less clutter and lines.my screenshot shows my idea that “hedaja” very helpfully recommended
I am hopefully going on another tour around mainland Greece in a few days and will put this program to the test when I get back. I can’t quite put the question As “answered” yet until I see how it all works but it looks very promising and helpful Thanks to the community for all the help/suggestions so far -definitely appreciated
