Does changing properties in umap affect OSM data?

Hi everyone,

I just dicovered uMap while searching for an alternative to google maps, so maybe my question is stupid but I do not want to make any mistakes and I could not find the answer in the community.

Currently I am planning a roadtrip using uMap, which works really well. But wenn placing markes on a known location the name of the town is shown in German (I am from Germany and I an using uMap on the German server).

As the street signs I will encounter are in the local language I would prefer the name of the town in the local language. In addition I would like to add some more data, e.g. dates, for which I could use existing property fields of properties I do not need.

So my question is. Can I safely edit these property fields and e.g. enter the name of the town in the local language without affecting the OSM data? Are these properties local to my uMap map or are they somehow synchonised with the OSM data?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Balt_4238, welcome to our forum. umap is a platform separated from OSM. You can do in umap whatever the map allows you to do, save it for yourself or share it with others. It does not affect the OSM database.

Nevertheless if you see anything in the umap basic data which is apparently wrong please feel free to create an OSM account and correct it in the OSM database so that also other users may benefit from your work.

Thanks a lot for the clarification!

And sure, should I notice any errors in the data I will try to correct it. Figuring out how to do that ist something I wanted to do for some time!
