Cycle hire bays

Hello. London Borough of Merton is amongst several marking lots of bays for dockless hire bikes (Lime, Human Forest…) with the aim of geofencing them to park there to reduce the clutter they cause. I’d like to put some on the map - any idea how? I can’t find a recent discussion. An extra piece of information might be whether a bay is on-road or off-road.

Do the locations have a physical object to make them recognisable for people who visit the place, or is this purely digital in some app?

amenity=bicycle_rental + bicycle_rental=dropoff_point + operator/brand=Lime etc is what i’d go with :slight_smile:

Yes, their boundaries and CYCLE HIRE ONLY are marked on the roadway.

They are also created by traffic orders, which are published in The Gazette under the OSM-compatible OGLv3 licence, e.g.

Theses would have operator=London Borough of Merton as they’re public and not restricted to any hire company.

There doesn’t seem to be anything documented for this, but perhaps you could use bicycle_parking:position=sidewalk|lane in a similar way to the existing fire_hydrant:position=*

There is! :wink: Just add position=lane/sidewalk/... to the amenity feature (see Proposal). We started using this tagging firstly (as mentioned) as bicycle_parking:position in the Berlin community some years ago, but switched to simply position a few weeks ago. Exactly because there are lots of other features than bike stands where this information is useful. Meanwhile we have some thousands of this attributes in the city.

Is it just for bikes? If it’s possible to share other vehicles like e-scooters/small electric vehicles, amenity=mobility_hub could also be fitting.

The recently added ones in Merton are, per the traffic order, exclusively for “electric assisted pedal cycles being used in a public hire scheme”.

Noted that @RedAuburn suggests adding operator/brand=, but although the operators that are intended to honour geofencing of their bikes to these are Lime and Human Forest, there is no branding indicated on the ground and I don’t think there’s a specific ban on them being used by other operators’ bikes. Also, this is a council initiative, so it’s probably best not to tie them down to particular operators. Some London boroughs have long-running dockless e-scooter trials (a vehicle type which is illegal to use on the public highway except these specific ones and in these boroughs) and at some point that will be made permanent/extended/cancelled.
